COLBY FOOTBALL RUNS PAST CUMBERLAND IN WIAA DIVISION 6 LEVEL 1 PLAYOFF

CUMBERLAND – Gavino Lopez ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Colby football team to a resounding 35-14 win over Cumberland in a WIAA Division 6 Level 1 playoff game Friday night at Cumberland High School.
Colby led 7-6 after the first quarter on the strength of a 16-yard touchdown pass from Roman Schmitt to Harley Schmelzer. After that, it was all Hornets.
Lopez had a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and scored on runs of 1 and 12 yards in the third quarter as Colby built a 28-6 lead.
Schmitt added an 18-yard touchdown run with 2:29 left in the game to finish to scoring for the Hornets.
Cumberland (8-2), seeded fourth, added a late touchdown pass in the final minute.
Colby rushed for 365 yards and outgained Cumberland 415-196 in the game.
Tyler Klement added 147 yards on the ground for the Hornets.
No. 5 seed Colby (8-2) will move on to a Division 6 Level 2 matchup at No. 1 seed and Cloverbelt Conference rival Eau Claire Regis on Friday, Nov. 1. Regis pounded Lake Holcombe/Cornell 36-8 on Friday to improve to 10-0.
Regis beat Colby 40-9 on Oct. 4 in its annual conference matchup.
