AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale football team was dominant in its 2019 opener, blowing past Pittsville 38-0 in a nonconference game between the two former Marawood Conference rivals.
Auburndale outgained Pittsville 529-124, holding the Panthers to just 22 passing yards in the victory.
Kyle Peterson had 132 yards rushing and a touchdown, and quarterback Cooper Weinfurter ran for 106 yards and two scored, and threw for 198 yards and another touchdown in the win.
Hunter Wright added a pair of field goals, including one as time expired at the end of the first half, for Auburndale.
Weinfurter threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Paul Kollross in the second quarter and had touchdown runs of 8 and 29 yards in the third quarter. Schyler Gilhausen had Auburndale’s final touchdown on an 11-yard run in the fourth.
Auburndale will play a nonconference game at Blair-Taylor next Friday, Aug. 30. Pittsville will also play a nonconference game next week, hosting Rib Lake/Prentice.
