GREENWOOD – Dayne Dielhelm scored from the 1-yard line with 1:43 to go to lift Athens to a 12-6 win over Greenwood in a Cloverwood Conference football game Friday night at Greenwood High School.
The win allows Athens (5-1, 4-0 Cloverwood) to keep pace with Abbotsford atop the Cloverwood standings and knocks Greenwood into a tie for fourth.
Greenwood (4-2, 2-2 Cloverwood) took the early lead when quarterback Cooper Bredlau threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Xander Hinker with 8:47 to go in the first quarter, giving the Indians a 6-0 advantage.
That, however, would all the Indians could muster against a stout Athens’ defense.
Athens tied the game when Cooper Diedrich ran in from the 6 with 1:03 to go in the first quarter and the score remained tied at 6-6 until the late touchdown by the Bluejays.
Wyatt Artac had 100 yards rushing on 20 carries and Hinker finished with 93 yards receiving on four catches to lead the Greenwood offense.
Dielhelm had 70 rushing yards for Athens.
Greenwood plays at Abbotsford (6-0, 4-0 Cloverwood) and Athens hosts Loyal (3-3, 3-1 Cloverwood) next Friday, Oct. 4. Athens is at Abbotsford on Oct. 18 for the final regular season game of the season.
