ATHENS - The Athens Bluejays plated 11 runs in the fourth inning to race past the Prentice Buccaneers by a final score of 17-0 on Monday night in season and Marawood Conference North Division baseball opener for both teams.
Cooper Diedrich tallied five runs batted in on a perfect night from the plate. Diedrich reached base on all four plate appearances with a walk, two singles, and a double that drove in three of the five runs in the second inning. Kyler Ellenbecker had three RBI to help the Bluejays' offensive effort.
Diedrich also dazzled from the mound, striking out 10 in four innings of work, allowing just one hit. Brooks Kraus pitched the final inning, striking out the side in the fifth.
Hunter Logan notched the only Buccaneers' hit of the game with a single in the third inning.
Athens will travel to Prentice on Thursday for a 4:45 p.m. Marawood North rematch.
