WISCONSIN RAPIDS – For the first time since 2014, when it won the Division 4 state title, the Assumption girls soccer team is heading back after the Royals shut out Eau Claire Regis/Chippewa Falls McDonell 2-0 in a WIAA Division 4 sectional final Saturday afternoon.

Assumption (13-0-2) will play in a Division 4 semifinal at the 2021 WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament at 10 a.m. Friday at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee. Seedings and matchups for the tournament will be announced on Sunday. The D-4 state championship game will be at 4 p.m. Friday.

The state tournament will be Assumption’s third in program history, having lost the championship match in 2011.

Kayla Kerkman scored at the 4:03 mark and Clara Kubis added a goal at 33:20 to provide the Royals with enough offense.

Kate Eithun saved all eight shots she saw in goal to allow Assumption to prevail.

“We had some early success in the first half with goals scored,” Assumption coach Jim Wendels said. “Regis came on strong in the second half, and our defense and goalie play was remarkable.

“I’m just so proud of these Royals players for all they have accomplished this season. They prepared for this moment with relentless pursuit of their goal, to earn a trip to state. We will work hard next week to go down to Milwaukee and represent Assumption well.”
