Zaleski Sports
MARKESAN – Amherst and Markesan, both ranked in the top five in the state in their respective divisions, had conference games canceled this week to both earn wins and stay undefeated. Instead of resting on their laurels, they decided to meet up on Friday night.
Amherst, ranked No. 2 in this week’s Division 5 state coaches poll, defeated Markesan, the No. 5 team in Division 6, 29-15.
The Falcons now stand at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division after the double win Friday, which includes the forfeit win over Weyauwega-Fremont. Markesan is 6-1.
Markesan took an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run by Tyler Mast and a two-point conversion.
Amherst retaliated with a 9-yard touchdown run by quarterback Landon Moe four minutes later, but missed the extra point and trailed by two.
Jake Hoffman scored from the 2 early in the second quarter to give Amherst a 14-8 lead and the Falcons were in control the rest of the way.
Moe threw a touchdown pass to Jake Derezinski in the third quarter and Hoffman added another TD run in the fourth before Markesan scored a late touchdown to provide the final margin.
Playing without starting running back Matthew Glodowski, the Falcons still racked up 265 yards rushing as Moe had 146 and Nasiah Holland stepped in to run for 103. Moe added 88 yards through the air in the win for Amherst.
Amherst plays a CWC Large game at Nekoosa next Friday, Oct. 1.
