SPORTSDESK - A day after a lackluster 11-1 defeat at the hands of Post 38 Appleton, the Wisconsin Rapids Rangers faced elimination from the 2019 Wisconsin State Legion Baseball Tournament.

On Saturday, the Rangers managed only two hits and one run to the offensive minded bunch from Appleton. The loss landed Wisconsin Rapids in the losers bracket and just one loss from ending their 2019 campaign. Up next, another team in the losers bracket, Post 91 Oconomowoc. Post 91 lost the first game of the tournament by a 5-4 count to Oshkosh and then won on Saturday, taking down Marinette 5-2. Wisconsin Rapids got their win on Friday night over host Chippewa Falls 7-1.

The Rangers turned to Wisconsin Valley player of the year and Zaleski Sports American Legion Regional MVP, Donovan Brandl, to keep their season alive. Brandl took to the mound in the top of the first inning and he forced Oconomowoc into two pop outs and a strikeout swinging for a quick three outs. In the bottom of the first inning, Brandl drove a 2-2 pitch with two outs in the inning over the right field fence for a solo homerun.

Wisconsin Rapids then got RBI hits from Cody Bredl and Gabe Zwicke to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. That would prove to be all the plate touches that the Rangers would need. Brandl would go 6 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits and confusing Oconomowoc hitters with eight strikeouts. Brandl would give up three runs, two coming in the top of the 7th, before Cody Bredl came in to record the final two outs of the game and defeat Oconomowoc 8-3.

Caleb Krommenakker, Gabe Zwicke and Brandl all recorded two hits in the game. Zwicke led the way in runs driven in with two. Nathan Krommenakker scored twice for the Rangers.

Wisconsin Rapids plays again on Sunday as one of only four teams left in the state tournament. Eau Claire, Appleton and Oshkosh will also play on Monday. Wisconsin Rapids takes on Oshkosh, who at the time of this article are in a suspended game due to weather, trailing Appleton 4-3 in the 6th inning.
