MADISON – Stevens Point Area Senior High junior Riley Pechinski is a state champion.
Pechinski shot a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday to finish 3-under par overall and finished first by five strokes to win the 2021 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament Division 1 individual title at University Ridge Golf Course.
Pechinski came into the second day of the tournament in second place, two shots behind New Richmond’s Lanie Veenendall.
Pechinski started with bogeys on two of the first four holes before three-straight birdies on holes 14-16. She had a double bogey on 18 before turning to the front nine, where she steadied her game with seven pars and birdies on No. 2 and No. 4.
Norah Roberts of Union Grove and A.J. Powell of Appleton North finished tied for second at 2-over par, with Middleton’s Ellie

Frisch fourth at 3-over, and Veenendall and Kylie Walker of Westosha Central tied for fifth at four-over par.
“I just hit the short grass, hit the greens and made some putts,” Pechinski said. “That’s all I needed to do. If I was in the rough, I knew I was going to have some trouble.”
Westosha Central won the team title with a two-day score of 637, seven shots better than Sussex Hamilton.
Wausau East/West’s Tess Bruner tied for 53rd with a two-day total of 180 after firing an 85 on Tuesday.
