NGL, ABBY/COLBY, SPENCER/COLUMBUS COMBINE FOR SIX STATE SPOTS AT DIVISION 2 WRESTLING SECTIONAL

AMERY – Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal had two champions and Abbotsford/Colby added another at the WIAA Division 2 individual wrestling sectional on Saturday at Amery High School.


The top three finishers in each weight qualify for the 2022 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 24-26.


Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal had three state qualifiers, Abby/Colby had two, and Spencer/Columbus another on Saturday.


Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal’s Luke Dux (29-4) won the 120-pound championship with a 3-0 win over Spencer/Columbus Catholic’s Treyton Ackman (31-4) as both will be moving on to state.


Dux defeated Ackman for the third-straight week after winning matches over him at the Cloverbelt Conference Tournament and the D-2 regional.


Ackman (31-4) lost to Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal’s Luke Dux (29-4) in the 120-pound championship and will move on to the state meet again.


In addition to Dux, Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal had two other state qualifiers as Gunner Hoffmann won the 285-pound championship and Derek Zschernitz finished second at 126.


Hoffmann (37-1) pinned Mason Baribeau of Baldwin-Woodville in 1:12 in the 285-pound championship.


Zschernitz (28-5) lost the championship match at 126 to Austin Defoe of Ashland, then came back to win a second-place wrestleback.


Abbotsford/Colby’s Tanner Halopka (47-1) won the 145-pound title, pinning Hunter Gartmann of Baldwin-Woodville in 2:44.


Also qualifying for state for Abby/Colby was Carter Grewe (45-3), who finished third at 195 pounds. Grewe lost in the semifinals before defeating Chris Najera of West Salem/Bangor by pin in 3:18 in the third-place match.
