WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Iola-Scandinavia stopped Assumption on a fourth down play inside the 30-yard line late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 42-34 win in a wild Central Wisconsin Conference Small Division football matchup Friday night at South Wood County Field at Lincoln High School.
The game featured nearly 800 yards of offense, 12 touchdowns, five lead changes and three scores in the first 1:46 of the third quarter, before the Thunderbirds (3-2, 2-0 CWC Small) eventually held on.
Isaiah Hoyord had touchdown runs of 10 and 1 yards for Iola-Scandinavia, and Reed Duellman had a 16-yard touchdown run and Ryan Shaw hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass from Jack Klatt for Assumption in the first half, but a missed extra point by the Royals allowed I-S to hold a 14-13 lead at the break.
The beginning of the second half was a blur. Duellman scored on Assumption’s first play from scrimmage, rushing 68 yards for a score, to give the Royals a 19-14 lead.
Iola-Scandinavia quickly retaliated as quarterback Parker Prahl ran in from 21 yards out just 1:17 later and the T-Birds led 21-19.
However, that lead would be short-lived as well as Duellman returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for an Assumption touchdown, giving the Royals a 26-21 advantage.
Hoyord added another touchdown four minutes later for I-S to give them a 28-26 lead.
This time, the lead was safe for the Thunderbirds, but not without some tense moments late.
Prahl tacked on touchdown runs of 14 and 36 yards in the fourth quarter before Assumption scored on a 1-yard Nick Leberg plunge to cut the Royals’ deficit to 42-34 with 4:09 remaining.
The Royals got one more shot to try to tie the game up, but were stymied by the Iola-Scandinavia defense late, and they fall to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
I-S finished with 420 total yards, 338 coming on the ground as Prahl ran for 194 yards and Hoyord 135, and both scored three times.
Duellman led the Royals with 131 yards rushing and Leberg added 78 in the loss.
Assumption will host Pittsville for a CWC Small game Thursday at 7 p.m. at South Wood County Field. The game will be live at zaleskisports.com. Iola-Scandinavia will be at Wild Rose on Friday, Sept. 24.
