ATHENS – The Greenwood baseball team is heading to the state tournament after defeating Edgar 7-3 in a WIAA Division 4 sectional final Tuesday.
Greenwood (17-6) will be moving on the 2021 WIAA State Baseball Tournament in Appleton on Monday. The Indians will play Rosholt (20-3) in the second of two Division 4 semifinals at 1:30 p.m. Boyceville (19-1) will take on Southwestern (11-10) in the other semifinal at 11 a.m. The championship game will be played at 6 p.m.
Greenwood will be making its sixth state appearance overall and first since winning the Division 4 title in 2013. Greenwood also won the Class C titles in 1988 and 1990, and made state in 1986 and 2012.
Greenwood reached the final with a 15-1 whitewashing on St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena in the semifinal, while Edgar edged Three Lakes/Phelps 2-1 in the other semifinal.
The Indians scored twice in the top of the first inning, added another third on an RBI single by Dakot Clark, one in the fourth on a pair of Edgar errors, and two in the sixth on another error and a passed ball.
Edgar scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning. Jordan Bunkelman had a one-out double, Ashton Schuett followed with a single, Everet Brehm walked, and all three came around to score to make it 6-3.
Greenwood added another in the seventh, and despite a walk and two hit batters in the seventh, the Indians were able to finish off the win.
Greenwood had 11 hits, three from Fletcher Bredlau. Cooper Bredlau, Westen Schmitz and Mason Learman each added a pair of hits for the Indians.
Edgar finishes the season 18-4 after making it to sectionals for the first time in program history.
