EDGAR – Edgar scored five times in the bottom of the first inning and held off a rally to defeat Wausau Newman Catholic 8-4 in a WIAA Division 4 baseball regional semifinal Tuesday at Edgar High School.

The top-seeded Wildcats (16-3) move on to a D-4 regional final at home on Wednesday against No. 2 seed Rib Lake (12-7), which defeated Athens 5-2 on Tuesday. Edgar defeated Rib Lake 9-1 in a nonconference game way back in its season opener on April 29. Newman Catholic finishes the season 7-10.

After Newman Catholic scored four times in the top of the fourth, Edgar responded with three runs in the fifth to give itself some breathing room and Jordan Bunkelman was able to close out the game with two scoreless innings on the mound.

Kyle Brewster picked up the win, striking out five and allowing four runs and six hits in four innings. Ashton Schuett pitched a scoreless fifth before handing it over to Bunkelman to finish it off.

Brayden Baumgartner had a single, a double and three RBIs, and Everet Brehm had two hits and two RBIs batting in the No. 8 and 9 spots, respectively, for Edgar.

Austin Dahlke, Bunkelman and Konnor Wolf also had RBIs in the win for the Wildcats.

Dylan Ackermann and Ben Noll each had two hits for the Cardinals.
