BARNEVELD POWERS PAST EDGAR IN WIAA DIVISION 5 STATE SOFTBALL SEMIFINAL

MADISON – The Edgar softball team’s dream of a state championship came to an end as the Wildcats lost to Barneveld 5-1 in a Division 5 semifinal at the 2022 WIAA State Softball Tournament on Friday morning at Goodman Diamond.
Barneveld (22-6) scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning and pitcher Daelynn Rhoades held Edgar to just three hits, ending the Wildcats’ season with a 17-7 record.
Barneveld will take on Wisconsin Rapids Assumption (20-2) for the Division 5 state championship at 8 a.m. Saturday. Listen live at zaleskisports.com.
Zoe Schmitz and Anessa Schmitz had back-to-back RBI singles, and Isabella Thousand drove in all three on a bases-loaded hit to give Barneveld a 5-0 lead in the fourth.
Edgar didn’t get a hit until the sixth when Morgan Streveler led off with a single and pinch runner Carly Feltz scored on a double by Leah Davis. A two-out triple by Makayla Wirkus in the seventh was Edgar’s only other hit in the game as Rhoades struck out 12.
Wirkus finished with four strikeouts and one walk in the loss for the Wildcats.
All five divisional state championship games will be televised live on Bally Sports Wisconsin and Bally Sports Wisconsin Extra throughout the day Saturday starting with the Division 5 game at 8 a.m.
