MADISON – The Wisconsin Rapids Assumption softball team will be playing for a state title after defeating Thorp 5-2 in a Division 5 semifinal at the 2022 WIAA State Softball Tournament at Goodman Diamond on Thursday night.

The Royals (20-2) move into the D-5 championship game against the winner of Friday morning’s game between Edgar and Barneveld. The final will be Saturday at 8 a.m., with a audio-only broadcast available at zaleskisports.com.

Assumption opened up an early lead as Lydia Smits and Macy Vollert connected on RBI singles in the first inning, and Vollert knocked in Claire Nelson, who had doubled, with another run in the third as the Royals led 3-0.

Thorp (12-12) countered with two runs in the top of the fourth as one run scored on an error and Alexis LaCanne knocked another.

The Royals immediately got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Anna Schooley reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout and came in with Cristin Casey as Casey’s flyball was misplayed in leftfield.

Ava Schill picked up the win on the mound for the Royals, striking out 15 and walking just one, while allowing three hits.

Assumption now plays Barneveld Saturday at 8am in the D5 state championship game. Listen live to the action at zaleskisports.com.
