AUBURNDALE – Wisconsin Rapids Assumption scored seven times in the first two innings and added five more in the fifth to finish off a 13-1 win over Auburndale in a Marawood Conference South Division softball game Thursday at Auburndale High School.
Assumption pitcher Ava Schill allowed a run in the first inning and that was it, holding the Eagles to two hits and striking out seven to earn the victory.
Sammy Nelson had an RBI double and two runners scored on a two-out error to give the Royals (9-0, 4-0 Marawood South) a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Two walks and an error led to Auburndale’s lone run in the bottom of the first before Assumption pulled away.
Sadie Galbreath had an RBI single, Schill delivered a sacrifice fly to score another, and two runs scored on an Auburndale error to push Assumption’s lead to 7-1.
Nelson had an RBI single in the third, Kendall Schmidt and Schill had RBI singles, and Abbi Berard had an RBI double in the five-run fifth.
Nelson had three of Assumption’s 11 hits.
“The three in the first inning was really huge,” Assumption co-coach Charlie Nelson said. “It kind of settles you down a little bit. The thing I was most proud of tonight is Ava was not on to start the game – came out and walked the first two batters, kind of like oh boy, here we go. They got a run in, and we buckled them down on defense, held it to 3-1, then we were able to just keep piling it on after that. I thought our energy was awesome after the first inning – a lot of really good at bats, long at-bats. I thought our bunting was phenomenal. We got our bunts down, and it really just put a lot of pressure on them to make some plays.”
Auburndale (5-2, 2-2 Marawood South) hosts Phillips on Friday. Assumption will be at home against Chequamegon.
Nelson said the Royals, even with their 9-0 start, are still growing.
“We’ve got a couple kids yet, that are a little raw that haven’t played in some big moments, and as we get into some tighter games and even later in the game, we were doing some things to try to work on that base running, getting bunts down, defensively, knowing where we’re going with the ball, so that’s really what we’re building on,” Nelson said.
