ALMOND – The Wisconsin Rapids Assumption softball team is heading to the state tournament after a dominating 4-0 win over undefeated Blair-Taylor in a WIAA Division 5 sectional final Thursday at Almond-Bancroft High School.

Assumption (19-2) will be making its sixth state tournament appearance and first since 2018. The Royals won a Division 3 state title in 2001 and a D-4 championship in 2005.

Assumption pitcher Ava Schill was on her game, striking out eight and allowing just two hits and three walks in a complete-game effort.

Claire Nelson had an RBI single in the top of the first innings and Schill knocked in Cristin Casey in the third to build a 2-0 lead.

Blair-Taylor only threatened once, with two runners reaching on walks in the second inning, before Schill was able to wiggle out of the jam. No more than one runner reached in any other inning.

Maleia Kolo smacked a two-run home run in the top of the seventh for the Royals to finish off the scoring.
