The Wisconsin high school boys basketball season kicked off last week for most of the teams in the area, with a few starting its 2021-22 campaign this coming week.

Athens (Marawood Conference North Division), Columbus Catholic (Cloverbelt Conference East Division), Edgar (Marawood Conference South Division) and Port Edwards (Central Wisconsin Conference South Division) are defending champions that return a number of key players.

Teams like Amherst, Iola-Scandinavia, Wausau Newman Catholic, Stratford and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption bring back rosters packed full of experienced players from the past year, or even two.

Edgar made a trip to the WIAA state tournament a year ago. Will someone from the area finish their season in Madison in March?

Here is a look at the upcoming season for the 24 teams in our coverage area:

We are excited about the challenge that lies ahead, especially in a very tough conference. I believe that we have very hard-working, unselfish, team-orientated kids who are going to take the season one day at a time and work to improve each day. Our expectations are to be a tough, physical defensive team and an unselfish, balanced offensive team. All the little things are going to be important to our success as a team. We are excited about our players that are coming back and newcomers that we will add to the mix. This team’s expectations start by coming to practice every day, competing and building upon our individual skills and team strengths. None of our team and individual goals can be achieved if we don’t compete at practice every day. If we can get better at practice each day it will set us up to compete with the teams we play this year and hopefully help us achieve some of the team goals we will have this year. It is going to be really important to play complimentary basketball. We want to be able to set a tone on defense and limit easy baskets and possessions for our opponents. All the while working on finding easier baskets and possessions on offense this year. If we can limit our turnovers, find ways to score at the rim and on the perimeter, and play solid defense we will be able to find success this year.”
