LOYAL — The Loyal/Greenwood varsity football team must forfeit Friday night's game and will be placed on one-year probation after the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association reviewed a player eligibility issue, the Loyal and Greenwood school districts announced in a joint statement.
The districts said they became aware of the issue following Friday's game, addressed it promptly and self-reported it to the WIAA, cooperating fully with the association's review. The one-year probation is a standard step the WIAA takes when an eligibility issue occurs, according to the statement.
"This was an honest mistake, and we take responsibility for the situation," the districts said.
The districts said they will review and strengthen their procedures to prevent a similar situation in the future, and thanked students, parents, coaches and the community for their support.
